“Voice” is that exciting element of narrative nonfiction that grabs us by the collar and won’t let us go. It’s what draws us in from the first sentence and keeps us hooked until the last. It’s what makes us feel like we’re in the mind of a real person who is giving us a window into their life. Did you know that you have more than one voice? In fact, you have many. Understanding and developing these voices can give you the freedom and flexibility you need to write about anything you want. During this live, generative Zoom webinar, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of voice and how to develop it in your essays and memoir writing. We’ll read examples of pieces with effective “voice” and see what craft elements they use to achieve it. This webinar will include writing prompts and live writing time. As well as some (optional) homework prompts for you to try at home.
What You’ll Learn
- EXPLORE the differences between the “Voice of Innocence” and the “Voice of Experience” and how to use them in your own work.
- DISCOVER what voices you already have and how to hone these voices.
- LEARN how to analyze an essay or memoir for voice.
- LEARN to use voice to write powerful essays or memoir pieces that editors and readers will love.
- WRITE new work to prompts and writing exercises.
